She was a producer and production designer, known for Say Anything (1989), Terms of Endearment (1983) and Broadcast News (1987). She was married to Tony Wade, Peter Bogdanovich and Phillip Klein.
She was executive vice president of James L. Brooks' production company, "Gracie Films," from 1985 to 1995.
While writing the film that became Pretty Baby (1978), a biographical account of professional photographer E. J. Bellocq in mid-1910s New Orleans, she originally envisioned Jane Fonda as Hattie, Jodie Foster as Violet, and Robert Redford as the photographer.
In the 1970's, her second husband director Peter Bogdanovich divorced her to be with starlet Cybill Shepherd. In the film Irreconcilable Differences (1984), a director (Ryan O'Neal) divorced his wife (Shelley Long) for a starlet (Sharon Stone). When Platt was asked about whether Irreconcilable Differences (1984) was inspired by her real life situation, her answer was: "They got more right than wrong".
She helped to create the plot for Peter Bogdanovich's movie Targets (1968). She also suggested to her husband that he should make Larry McMurtry's novel "The Last Picture Show" into a film.
